Former finance minister Rishi Sunak has become the next British prime minister, but not many people know much about him. The former Labour minister lost the leadership election to Liz Truss last September but has now become the fifth person to become prime minister in six years and third in less than two months. He is the first prime minister of South Asian descent and the youngest since World War II.
Before being appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sunak served as a parliamentarian in the Ministry of Housing and a chief secretary in the Treasury. He was a Fulbright Scholar and subsequently won the Conservative party's election for MP in Richmond, Yorks, in May 2015. During his tenure as a cabinet minister, he also served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
Sunak was born in Southampton, and his parents came to the UK in the 1960s. Sunak attended Winchester College in England and later went on to study economics and politics at Oxford and Stanford. His wife, Akshata Murthy, is a fashion designer and has a home in Santa Monica, California. The couple recently made headlines when they appeared in a Sunday Times list of Britain's richest people.
Sunak is expected to face a tough challenge because he will have to navigate the complicated political and economic environment of the country. He will have to deal with the Conservative Party's divisions over immigration and Brexit. He is also expected to have to deal with the economy, which has been shaken by the turmoil in the last few months. But it's clear that he has the experience to deal with the issues at hand.
